This #MuseumMonday we’re highlighting an “oddity” in our collection: the double trolley poles installed on Cincinnati Street Railway 2227.

In the early 1900s Cincinnati’s telephone lines were underground. As transit companies began using electric trolleys (rather than horsecars), some people feared that the electrical current being discharged by the trolleys into the ground would interfere with the city’s telephone service.

Following legal disputes with Cincinnati Bell Telephone Co., the Cincinnati Street Railway opted to purchase specially designed streetcars that used double trolley poles within city limits.

Cincinnati was fairly unique because it was one of only three cities in North America whose streetcars used double overhead trolley wire and twin trolley poles. The other cities that used this system were Havana (Cuba) and Merrill (Wisconsin).

Today we operate #Cincinnati Street Railway 2227 “normally” using a single pole, but both poles remain installed to demonstrate how the car looked upon delivery in 1919. #history #transit #trolley #streetcar

#FlashbackFriday: Sept. 6th, 1959 was a picture perfect day in Johnstown - so much so that this photo actually was used to create a maxicard at one point. According to the back of the card, the photo features Johnstown Traction Co. car 352 operating for a National Railway Historical Society convention. #history #transit #trolley #streetcar #JohnstownPA

Collection

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum is focused on preserving and restoring our collection of antique streetcars. The Museum was founded in 1953 and has continued to conserve, preserve, and restore cars through a mostly volunteer effort. Today, we house a collection of 50 streetcars, many of which are operational and used for daily rides. Visit our Collection page to learn more about all of our different trolleys!
