SUMMARY:Trolleyology: The Terrible Trolley-ology
DESCRIPTION:Join PTM staff\, volunteers\, and members for our Zoom series\, Trolleyology! These virtual programs feature Pennsylvania transit history topics and tales of our collection that you can experience from home. Registration is required but free of charge. Donations are welcome and encouraged. \n  \nThe Terrible Trolley-ology\nApril 29\, 2026 – 7 PM ET – Presented by Pennsylvania Trolley Museum staff – Michael Buchta\, Jeanine DeBor\, Kevin Zebley\, and Kristen Fredriksen\nREGISTER HERE \nFrom a handwritten letter by a 9-year-old girl to one of Pittsburgh’s most recognizable streetcars\, the story of The Terrible Trolley is deeply rooted in the city’s pride\, passion\, and love of football. \nJoin Jeanine DeBor and Michael Buchta of the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum along with other PTM staff for a program that traces the full Pittsburgh story of PCC car 1713. Discover how a young fan’s idea helped transform this interurban car into a rolling symbol of team spirit during an era of Steelers dominance\, capturing the imagination of riders and football fans across the region. \nThis program explores how the trolley first received its unforgettable paint scheme\, the journey to track it down years after it left service\, and the painstaking restoration work that returned it to its former glory. Along the way\, you’ll learn how a “terrible” trolley became a beloved piece of the museum’s collection. \n  \nThis program will be recorded and available at a later date on the PTM YouTube channel. \n  \nTrolleyology presentations will continue on a regular or semi-regular basis. Interested in presenting? Email Kristen at kfred@patrolley.org! We’re specifically looking for programs related to the Trolley Era in general\, Pennsylvania transit history\, or stories about our collection. Please join our e-mail list to stay up-to-date with program announcements and other PTM news! \n*For the best experience\, we recommend downloading Zoom in advance. \nNOTE: This is a virtual event

SUMMARY:Remake Learning Days: STEAM Explorers (Homeschool STEAM Day)
DESCRIPTION:Dive into all five areas of STEAM with interactive activities\, demos\, and experiments at stations spread throughout the whole museum! This family-friendly event is designed to engage homeschool students from PreK – 12th grade in all five areas of STEAM: Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art\, and Math.  \nInteractive\, hands-on STEAM stations will be set up all around the museum and will include the following activities: \n\nInvestigate the technology of the trolley era by exploring real trolley and streetcar parts and equipment. Compare what makes trolleys operate to how cars\, buses\, and other transit vehicles work today. In addition\, make sure to take a ride on a fully restored antique streetcar!\nDiscover how electricity works\, then investigate how trolleys and streetcars use electricity in order to run. Additionally\, get a chance to construct working circuits of your very own. \nFor a creative challenge\, can you build the tallest Trolley Observation Tower possible without causing the tower to collapse? Explore the principles of engineering and dive into the Engineer Design Process as you keep trying to build even taller and better than before.  \nWhat will transportation look like in the future? Dream up plans for how we’ll be getting around in one hundred years\, then design your own LEGO® streetcars and trolleys of the future. \nExplore the colorful artwork and history of the many different custom paint jobs featured on local trolleys (like the psychedelic “Mod Desire” and the Pittsburgh fan favorite\, “The Terrible Trolley\,”)\, then design your very own streetcar and shrink it down to pocket size to take home using Shrinky Dink science!\nExamine the amazing power of the Sun! Discover how we use solar energy to power our trolleys\, then make your very-own ultraviolet-detective bracelet out of special UV-reactive beads to take home.\nTo wrap up your day\, complete a streetcar-themed Scavenger Hunt in the Trolley Display Building. \n\nEnjoy this event with your general admission – no extra cost or advanced tickets required. This event is a part of Remake Learning Days. Guests can purchase tickets at the museum on the day of the event. Members receive free admission! \nKids receive FREE ADMISSION as part of Free Kid May!
