Pittsburgh Safety Island

The preserved mast, light, sign and concrete auto stopper are on exhibit at the Richfol Platform.
The preserved mast, light, sign and concrete auto stopper are on exhibit at the Richfol Platform.
Acquired in 1998, this base and mast are probably the last of the trademark safety island components left in existence from the Pittsburgh streetcar system. This distinctive item was part of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia’s transit street-scape for many years. This particular artifact was removed from the Smithfield Street Bridge in front of the former P&LE Railroad station, which was served by numerous streetcar lines until July of 1985.
It is planned to have a full “Safety Island” as part of the Museum’s development at the East Site, which will be part of the construction of “Trolley Street.” Your support of the PTM can help make this possible!
